Asbestos Management Plans – Keeping Your Workplace Compliant

More Than a Tick-Box Exercise

An Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) is a legal document that sets out how asbestos-containing materials identified in your workplace will be managed, monitored and, where required, safely removed. Under the WHS Regulations, any PCBU with an Asbestos Register must also maintain a current AMP that is reviewed at least every five years, or whenever circumstances change.

A well-prepared AMP does more than satisfy a legal requirement. It protects your workers, reduces your liability and gives your organisation a clear, practical framework for managing one of Australia’s most significant workplace hazards.

The Register and the Plan Work Together

Your Asbestos Management Plan should always be read alongside your Asbestos Register. The Register tells you where asbestos is. The Plan tells you what to do about it. If you do not yet have a current Register, the starting point is a Division 5 asbestos audit of your premises. For buildings about to undergo major works, a Division 6 audit is required before the Management Plan can be updated to reflect the post-works position.

Who Needs an Asbestos Management Plan?

An AMP is required for all non-domestic premises built before 2004 where asbestos has been identified. This includes commercial offices, schools, aged care facilities, government buildings, industrial properties and community facilities. If your property also contains other hazardous substances, our hazardous materials audit service can identify those alongside the asbestos assessment and inform a broader management strategy.
